Hunting

The hunting season for 2005 is done, and we are looking forward to the season of 2006. We were fortunate to have a great bunch of hunters; this year we had a success rate of 72% on elk and 81% on mule deer. We shot some trophy elk and deer and missed a few as well. All of that is part of hunting.

The regular crew will be back with us next year with Will doing a little more hunting for us as he bought his own business working on embryo transfers for cows. We'll be glad that he can share more hunting time with us.

We are currently booking for the 2006 Fall season. If you are interested in hunting with us in the fall, please let us know as soon as possible to insure that we can give you the hunting dates you want. The set aside licenses for Montana will be under $1000 this year.

About your outfitter

In 1884 Paul Rigler came to the mountains above the Yellowstone River and ran a boarding house, saloon, and grocery store in the mining community of Aldridge, Montana. In 1908 he moved his wife and 6 sons out of the hills and onto this ranch site. From that date on, the family has been involved with ranching, outfitting and hunting.

As the third generation on this ranch, Frank Rigler is proud to offer the same quality outdoor experience, rich with the tradition started years before him. The commitment is, and always has been, to excellence. Frank has been featured in American Hunter, and Sports Afield and is an active member in the Montana Outfitters and Guides Association.

Slip & Slide Ranch & Guide ServiceWhere we hunt

Slip & Slide Guide Service outfits Montana's Hunting District #313. This district is located 12 miles north of Gardiner, Montana and Yellowstone National Park. We have a US Forest Service camp permit in the Gallatin National Forest in the Absarokee-Beartooth Wilderness Area.

This is the only major drainage between Livingston and Gardiner, Montana without a public access road. It is a rugged mountainous area - our camp's elevation is above 7500 feet. The area varies from heavy timber to open meadows to rugged mountain cliffs. Our hunting country has a healthy native elk population, a good mule deer population, and good bear hunting. This rugged country also is the traditional thoroughfare for the migrating Northern Yellowstone elk herd. Our backcountry camp is nearly seven miles from our ranch. We drive two miles on our private road to the horse camp. From that point on, we're in the saddle! When the weather is extremely cold we pull out of camp and hunt out of the lodge.

General Information

We will not guarantee kills. We will guarantee the best quality experience, personnel, accommodations, meals, and service that your money can buy. The country we hunt and pack into is unparalleled in beauty - good animals are there for those hunters willing and able to hunt for them. Everyone associated with our outfitting operation comes with a strong background in hunting and packing. They give 100%  and will hunt just as hard as a client is capable of hunting.

We have, at a maximum, eight hunters in camp during the first and last weeks and provide four guides. During the middle 3 weeks we have a maximum of six hunters and provide three guides. During bow season we will have, at a maximum, six hunters in camp.

Your rates include all but the cost of your license, and the processing and transport of your game meat.

Licenses and bookings are limited. Guaranteed licenses must be applied for by the 15th of March. Contact us immediately to arrange a booking date.

Hunting_4.jpg (10467 bytes)Accommodations

In camp we have wall tents with wood stoves. Foam pads are supplied; cots are provided for those hunters who want them. We have a tack tent and cook tent. We maintain a top rate camp and provide the hunter with comfortable accommodations!

At horse camp we have a hunting lodge. It provides our operation with a great hunting diversity. If weather is severe and the game movement is low, we will be hunting from the lodge. The lodge is a 2 1/2 story log structure that sleeps 12. It is complete with all the modern conveniences.

Horses

We maintain a sizable herd of horses for our outfitting operation. Many of our horses are ranch raised, and all are used during normal ranch operations. They are big, sure-footed animals with a good disposition - if they don't fit that picture, they are not on the ranch. As gentle and well-mannered as our horses are, we insist all hunters do some riding before they arrive at the ranch.
